Brand Timeline

Oliver is a family-owned company that has been operating for over 50 years. It all began in the year 1969 in a small menswear boutique in Würzburg called ‘Sir Oliver’. When choosing this name, the company founder Bernd Freier was inspired by Oliver Twist; a small boy who sets out with great courage to seek his fortune. Bernd found in himself the same will to succeed in transforming the boutique from a place of 25 square meters space into an international success story.

Only four years after founding the menswear brand Sir Oliver, the brand Comma which specialized in women’s fashion was founded in Düsseldorf. Comma was founded in the same year that women in Germany are allowed to pursue a job without needing their husband’s consent for the first time. Thus, it has been supporting women in their triumphant progress toward greater self-determination ever since. All garments in this line consist of feminine cuts and high-quality materials.

In 1978, the brand Sir Oliver changed its name to S. Oliver, which a year later was registered at the German Patent and Trademark Office in Munich. Omitting ‘Sir’ from the name is also much better suited to women.

A new addition was added to the collections in 1987 which is the children’s product line Oliver Twist. It is available today under the name S. Oliver Junior. The collection is made to feel good, comfortable, and practical with lots of cheerful colours.

Oliver launched a fashion program in 1994 that appeals to young adults called Q/S, an abbreviation of the name Quick Step, which was later positioned as a stand-alone brand.

The S. Oliver Group evolved in 2016 and became a multi-brand corporate group with a holding structure. The S. Oliver and the comma lines each create a complementary brand world within themselves, and QS completes this strategic brand portfolio.
